Noh mask : Onryo and some of it's type

Hello internet, moment's are cherised so..let's continue this blog series together, and enjoy it the best we can, because this is the last of the Noh mask blog series that i'll write, so for the last time thank you so much for whoever reading this, and thoughts, that will be always be appreciated it. so.. without further ado..let's get into it.

So the last entry of the Noh mask type is the Yurei type which carries the character of Ghost and Spirit within the play, which something i always anticipating to write about, among the type of mask. Mainly because it's has an interesting origin and traits that i kinda like a little more than to the mask that i have blabber about on this blog. Ghost somehow always bring an aura of tragedy, as ghost are an entity that can't seperated from death, which is in my opinion always bring somewhat of a moral story and meaning to their character.

Which we'll be covering the story and meaning behind these Noh mask and what role they have.

So the first of it's kind is..

Hannya

Probably the most iconic among the Ghost and Spirit mask community, this mask horns and distinguishable eyes has always been represented as a terrifying ghost character, a knitting brows and forever supple cheeks will always served to form an expression and features that represented human emotion, in a horrific way, that only human could imagine to show it on their face. So what's make her feelings to make an expression like that and yes it's a her. Supposedly this mask contain many women emotion, such as jealousy, grudge, sorrow and grief of women, what stress could do to your face. How the name Hannya came into being though, has two speculation, first is a monk from Nara Hannya-bō translated the creation of this type into art, and the other is created a mask of a demons which of course required a mask maker to done the job, the demon mask served as a wisdom to which people can open their eyes to the reality of things, which the wisdom was called Hannya in Buddhism, stay happy gals.

Ayakashi

This mask regarded as a masterpiece, represented as military commander that lost his life but left a strong grudge in the living, as why it's considered as a masterpiece, the reason is this mask described both dignity and burning heart with that realistic eyes and beautiful color, that left no sign of trace of blood in warfare or sweaty smell, it's better be, there's nothing more scarier than military commander mask killing people left and right, no matter how beautful his skin is. It's slant eyes with somewhat glittering metal rings on it, represent a strong will and hatred to this world as an alien character to the world he left. The distinguishable eye has brows that has painted to express it's power, and the facial feature drawn at a stroke to describe it's everlasting energy, facial hair matters guys, no matter how small it is.

Kawazu

If you want to understand a depression a little better of how it feels like, just look at the mask, the face says it all, picture worth a thousand word as they said, but to express it maybe take a little more than a couple of bad games and burnt food, because this mask to me in my eyes somewhat represent what rock bottoms feels like, So who is hurting this mask? well, most of them who feels this way is none other than themselves and this mask is no different, in the story he was damned by violating the precept against killing because his livelihood was butchery and the tragedy began as a ghost of a old man. Kawazu is picture as a deformation version of Yase-Otoko, vacant eyes and hollow cheeks, even a wet and dishevelled as his fashion choice, which the purpose of the look is to show the weakness and misery of the mask, so even the most tough audience can't help but to sympatized with him, so..if you ever feel like this or somewhat have taken a similiar expression on the face, seek help fam, depression is no joke, and probably that's what the mask trying to express.

And that's will bring the end of the series, thank you for the time and thoughts, hope there's something you can learned from this mask and their story, and good for you, if it does as it does in someway for me.

See you next time guys, hope you have a nice days.
